Active GPS tracking system find its applications in industries, businesses, and in some cases, for personal use also. Vehicle tracking system is a popular Active GPS Tracking System that finds its place in real time traffic surveillance.
GPS Tracking System

Commercial entities and individuals have a growing interest in tracking systems that use GPS. GPS by itself cannot serve as an active GPS monitoring system; rather it is a positioning system that uses passive, one-way satellite communications. However, combined with a wireless communications technology like cellular telephony, GPS can become a part of a very effective tracking system. Affordable GPS services and the ever-present mobile services are the driving forces behind the employment of tracking capabilities in different fields. Fleet management, personal location services, pets, electronic surveillance of parolees, cargo and other mobile assets are some of the areas where active GPS tracking systems are used. But the technical and operational requirements for the various tracking applications are not the same. Power supply represents a key differentiator among tracking systems, which must support positioning, microprocessor and communications components and often other sensors. Tracking systems must effectively determine and report location and local status, while operating without an external power source. This has limited the scope and the scale of applications to date. Most conventional tracking solutions rely on cellular or satellite communications systems.
Active GPS Tracking System

An active GPS tracking system is a real-time system that uses GPS and a cellular network to gather real time data wherever it is deployed.
Passive GPS Tracking System

A passive GPS tracking system is used where real-time data is not required, but records need to be maintained.
Vehicle Tracking System

A vehicle tracking system can produce individual vehicle data like spacing, headway, velocity, and acceleration. This can lead to better traffic flow modeling and a better understanding of driver behavior. A car tracking system or the auto tracking system is also one of the biggest advancements in car security. The system operates using radio or satellite positioning to locate a car after it has been stolen. When the car is stolen, the vehicle tracking system is activated to send out a unique signal that the authorities can follow. Some vehicle tracking systems can detect unauthorized movement of the vehicle and relay the information to the police. The systems are built to withstand the most demanding of operational conditions and also permit selective reporting of vehicle position and event information. In some auto tracker systems, the tracking modes are user-defined, and include tracking, polling and logging. The units support logging of positional information and also records exceptions such as alarm conditions, failure and break of GPS signal strength, loss of power and stop / go events.
Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) is an automated auto tracking system used for locating vehicles, fleet management and monitoring data. An anonymous vehicle tracking system traces individual vehicles on transportation networks by linking vehicle features acquired from various detection stations. This system finds its application in real time traffic surveillance and is a valuable tool for real time congestion monitoring, traveler information, and control and system evaluation.
